The
Pink Beds is a flat valley at the headwaters of the South Fork Mills
River. It is believed to be named for all the pink Mountain Laurel
blossoms appearing in the spring. The upper end of the trail, open to
bikes, travels along the low hills at the edge of this valley. Several
clear water brooks, such as this one, flow down from the side of the
Pisgah Ridge, under the trail, and into the South Fork Mills River. At
their juncture are large marshy areas and bogs, which are very rare in
these mountains. Several species of rare and endangered plants live in
these bogs. To explore that area, however, you will have to leave the
bike behind.
