Flat Laurel Creek and Sam Knob

The pine trees in the foreground are Red Spruce, and the ones in the background are Fraser Fir. The Firs are being ravaged by a small insect, the Balsam Wooly Adelgid, which probably killed the tree in the picture. However, several healthy spruces and firs survive along this trail, making for some incredible scenery. Some firs have started to show signs of genetic resistance to the adelgid - which could bode well for future generations of trees!
