A dry alternative to fording Fletcher Creek WAS this log bridge, located a few hundred feet downstream from the ford, where the Middle Fork trail joins the Spencer Branch trail. This bridge was washed away during the floods of 2004 (the water was approximately hub-deep in this picture!). I don't expect it to be replaced anytime soon.

There are many bridges like this left in Pisgah, though. I've been asked if you have to walk these log bridges, or if you can ride them. Well, you can sure try - but it's a narrow, slippery log and a long drop down to the rocky, cold creek!
