Located
in an area collectively know as North Carolina's High Country are
the resorts of Sugar Mountain and Beech Mountain. This
area has the highest average elevation in the Eastern US and it
surrounds the towns of Boone, Banner Elk and Blowing
Rock. Primarily operating as ski resorts in the winter, these
two locations do provide many miles of mountain biking trails for
riding during the "off" season.
Sugar
Mountain
Back in 1993, Sugar Mountain Ski Resort started its mountain
biking program, building 10 miles of trails for its visitors to enjoy. Today,
the Resort offers mountain bikers over 20 miles of maintained singletrack
and doubletrack trails, with no cost to ride and open to the public.
However, for a charge, lift service is offered to the top of the 5,200
foot peak of the mountain
to take the work out of your rides, or for practice on your
downhilling skills. The Gray lift, one of the longest in North Carolina, offers
service to mountain bikers, hikers, and sightseers.
All trails rated intermediate to
advanced. Vertical drop from peak to lodge area is 1,200'.
Lift Service Operation:
Weekends Only, July 1 - September 3, 10:00 AM to 5:30 PM (Weather
Permitting)
Rates: $7 One Time Pass or $20 All Day Pass (subject to change)

Beech
Mountain
Several trails, built and maintained by the Beech Mountain Bicycle Club,
can be found near the ski resort community of Beech Mountain, the East's
highest incorporated township at 5,550 feet. When riding here,
please respect the natural
beauty of the mountain and the property of the many landowners who allow
us to ride on their land.
Information in the Beech Mountain Trail Information section can be found on the Beech Mountain Biking Trails brochure,
which has maps, and is available by mail from the Beech Mountain
Chamber of Commerce or from local bike shops.
