Function
of the National Mountain Bike Patrol and SEMBP
You can often find Southeastern Mountain Bike Patrollers out on the
trails in the area providing mechanical or first aid assistance,
giving riding tips, educating riders on low-impact riding
techniques, or just helping folks choose a good trail to ride. We
attend events such as races and bike festivals, and we also ride
popular trail areas on weekends. Look for the bright yellow jerseys
and the NMBP logo!
Our
functions follow those set by IMBA's National Mountain Bike Patrol:
-
Help
fellow mountain bikers and other trail users.
-
Provide
service and support to the land managers.
-
Help
preserve mountain biking trail opportunities.
-
Have
fun!
From
local knowledge to serious first aid, sharing sunscreen to repairing
a bent derailleur, there's no limit to the amount of information and
assistance we can provide. We are trained in basic first aid and
CPR. We are also competent in trailside bike repair such as fixing
broken chains, changing flats, and brake and shifter adjustment. We
know the local trails well and we can show you the easiest way back
to the trailhead, a ride up to a great view, or the longest, most
challenging loop around!
Where
Do We Patrol?
For now, the Asheville Unit of the Southeastern Mountain
Bike Patrol covers the following areas in Western North Carolina's
Pisgah and Nantahala National Forests and private
parks (click on any of the blue names to find out more about that area):
Helping
Local Land Agencies
Part of our function is to provide service and support to the local
land managers. Working closely with agencies such as the National
Forest Service, we share with them useful information on things
like:
-
trail
conditions (trail erosion, downed trees and large branches)
-
number
of riders, hikers, and horseback riders seen on the trails
-
trash,
graffiti, illegal trails, and other misuses of the land
-
new
trail ideas (such as those that might make new loops out of
existing trails)

Me Up!
Southeastern Mountain Bike Patrol members are mountain bikers with a
strong sense of community. If you're the kind of person who likes to
help others, give back to the trails, volunteer for your local park
or forest, or help keep trails open for mountain biking - while
riding your bike and having fun - then click
here to find out how to join us!
